Kevin played the piano for five years before switching to the horn in the fifth grade. He enjoys reading Kafka, Faulkner and Flannery O’Conner and collects baseball cards.
What do you want patrons of the Symphony to know about you?
I am a native Floridian and have only lived out of the state for 2 years of my life (while attending SMU in Dallas for my Grad studies). I was born in Miami, grew up in Orlando, went to school in Tallahassee and is now starting my 17th season here in Jacksonville.
What would you be doing if you weren’t a professional musician?
If I wasn't a profession musician I would probably be digging in the dirt somewhere. (I always wanted to be an archaeologist) History fascinates me.
What do you do in your spare time (other than practice!)?
In my spare time (besides practicing), I chase after my three boys and try to keep them out of trouble! I also teach french horn privately and at the University of North Florida.
What is your favorite thing about being a professional musician?
My favorite thing about being a professional musician is that every time I show up for a concert I know it will NOT be like the last concert. You never know what will happen and that is exhilarating.
What sport(s) do you participate in?
While protecting my "chops" is of the utmost importance, my playing sports days are over, however, I do coach little league baseball in the fall and I am head referee at my church's Upward basketball program.
Do you have a favorite team?
My favorite sports teams centered around when I was 6 years old and decided to root for all the teams that did well that year. I became a Phillies fan in 1980 after they won a World Series (they wouldn't win another until 28 years later) and a Tampa Bay Bucs fan when they almost got to the Super Bowl in 1979 (they wouldn't win a Super Bowl until 23 years later). It was worth the wait between championships! Of course I am an FSU alum, so that is my college football team.
What is your favorite food?
I love Mexican!
Who is your favorite composer?
My favorite composer....that is a tough one. Gustard Brahms maybe? (a combination of my 3 favorite composers)
What’s currently on your Ipod?
Currently on my ipod. U2, Pink Floyd, Lord of the Rings soundtrack, Miles Davis, and of course many pieces of classical music.
Kevin received his bachelor’s degree in music performance from Florida State University, where he studied with William Capps, and earned a master’s in music performance from Southern Methodist University where he studied with Greg Hustis.
