Lisa Ponton

Viola

What do you want patrons of the Symphony to know about you?
In addition to performing, I love teaching. Helping my students develop their musical skills is very satisfying work.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a professional musician?
I had always hoped to be Earth’s ambassador to Vulcan.

What do you do in your spare time (other than practice!)?
I love to read – especially mysteries, science-fiction/fantasy and history. I’m also impatiently awaiting the next season of Sherlock on Masterpiece.

What is your favorite thing about being a professional musician?
The opportunity to travel the world and experience different cultures.

Do you have a favorite team?
The Chicago Cubs

What is your favorite food?
Homemade noodles made by my husband.

Who is your favorite composer?
There is so much great music from so many different time periods that I couldn’t possibly pick just one  favorite composer. Renaissance composers Josquin desPrez, Orlande deLassus and Palestrina. Baroque composers JS Bach, Corelli and Telemann. (Telemann’s Violin Concerto in A Major, nicknamed “The Frogs”, never fails to put me in a good mood. He is also credited with composing the first concerto for viola.) Then there’s the chamber music of Haydn, Beethoven and Brahms. And then…

What’s currently on your iPod/iPhone?
Actually just that U2 download that came with the phone.
