New General Manager has high hopes for Jacksonville Symphony
Richard Naylor has high hopes for the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra.
He took over as general manager last month, and already he believes Jacksonville’s orchestra can rival Atlanta’s. He knows what he’s talking about, because he grew up in Atlanta, where his dad introduced him to classical music and had a subscription to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
In 16 years the Atlanta Symphony has grown from a $15 million orchestra to a $50 million one. Jacksonville has a way to go with an annual budget of $8 million, and Naylor said “it’s going to take a lot of investment from the city, from the community, from us as an orchestra, to build that, but we have a very strong footing to become a really dominant orchestra in the Southeast.”
He’s adamant that, just as Northeast Florida is called the FirstCoast, his new orchestra should be known as the First Orchestra. “We’re one of the strongest in the state of Florida right now.”
